From Refuge to Resilience – My Story Behind Freedom & Flourish
Share
There was a time when my family and I sought shelter in a women’s refuge. It was a place of safety, but it also came with many unknowns. We arrived with almost nothing—no extra clothes, no food. Like many families in these situations, we were forced to leave everything behind for a fresh start.
Life in the Refuge: Finding Comfort in Donations
The refuge provided so much more than just a roof over our heads. They had food available, often donated by kind strangers and local organisations. Families received storage in the communal kitchen, each with its own locked cabinet to keep food safely stored. There was a level of privacy and security in this, making us feel more at home despite the circumstances.
The rooms varied in size, with bunk beds accommodating up to ten people. Despite the modest setup, the sense of community was invaluable. Everyone was there for a similar reason, offering understanding and support. It wasn’t just adults supporting one another—children, too, found solace in each other, building friendships that offered some normalcy in an otherwise challenging time.
The Power of Donations: Clothes and Essentials
Clothing, whether for adults, children, or even infants, was all donated. From baby clothes to warm bedding, the items we received helped us get by day-to-day. For my family, getting to the store wasn’t always possible, so these donations became lifelines. Each piece was a reminder that people out there cared. That kindness was powerful.
Why I Created Freedom & Flourish
My time in the refuge left a lasting impact on me. I knew I wanted to give back to the places and people who offer help when it's needed most. That’s why I founded Freedom & Flourish. Through this initiative, we raise funds to supply refuges with food, clothing, and essential resources for families. Beyond the basics, I also hope to support the incredible staff, helping them pursue further training, like therapy courses, to continue providing compassionate support to families.
Every purchase from Freedom & Flourish contributes to these missions, ensuring that families like mine can find comfort, safety, and a sense of hope in difficult times. The refuge was a place that helped us survive, and with Freedom & Flourish, my goal is to help these spaces continue their mission for many more families in need.
Conclusion
Reflecting on my time in the refuge, I’m filled with gratitude for the people and resources that helped us through. Freedom & Flourish is my way of paying that gratitude forward, ensuring that women’s refuges continue to have the means to provide for families who need them. Together, we can support these safe havens and the communities they shelter, offering hope and compassion to those on their journey to healing.
